I can say this much. There are few things that my old lab loves more than to lay in the grass in the shade on a hot day. Crap pickup in grass is no harder than gravel, just a little more maintenance.

Like you, I think, the point I was making was little pleasures for your old dog like a grassy shady spot are nice. Small yards are easy to upkeep.
